I’ve always been driven by a need to find the truth beneath the surface. Too often, we let media narratives do the thinking for us. I’m sharing my research to change that. By bringing hidden information and logic to light, I hope to encourage a community of independent thinkers who value facts over volume.
Did you know: In the United States, media ownership is highly concentrated. As of 2026, approximately 90% of American media outlets are controlled by just six major conglomerates. This is a significant shift from 1983, when that same 90% was distributed among 50 different companies.
The “Big Six” that dominate the landscape today are:
1. Comcast
The largest media company in the US by revenue.
- Key Assets: NBCUniversal (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo), Telemundo, Universal Pictures, and the Peacock streaming service.
- Reach: As the nation’s largest home internet and pay-TV provider, they control both the content and the “pipes” that deliver it.
2. The Walt Disney Company
A global powerhouse in entertainment and sports.
- Key Assets: ABC News, ESPN (80% stake), Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Pixar, 20th Century Studios, and Disney+.
- Reach: Disney’s influence spans from broadcast news to the world’s most successful film franchises.
3. Warner Bros. Discovery
Formed by the 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, this entity recently underwent further consolidation, including a massive streaming merger with Netflix in late 2025.
- Key Assets: CNN, HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Entertainment, and the Discovery networks.
- Reach: The Netflix-WBD partnership has created a streaming behemoth with one of the world’s largest content libraries.
4. Paramount Skydance
Following its acquisition by Skydance in 2025/2026, the company formerly known as Paramount Global (and ViacomCBS) remains a major player.
- Key Assets: CBS News, Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, and Paramount+.
- Reach: They own CBS, which consistently ranks as the most-watched broadcast network in the US.
5. Sony Group Corporation
While a Japanese company, its entertainment division is a titan of American media.
- Key Assets: Sony Pictures (including Columbia and TriStar), Sony Music, and PlayStation.
- Reach: Sony is a leader in both film production and the global gaming market.
6. Amazon
The tech giant has aggressively moved into media ownership to bolster its Prime ecosystem.
- Key Assets: MGM Studios, Amazon Prime Video, and Twitch.
- Reach: Through its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, Amazon now controls a massive catalog of classic Hollywood IP.
Other Influential Owners
Beyond these six, a few individual billionaires and specialized groups hold significant sway over specific sectors:
- Fox Corporation (The Murdochs): While smaller after selling most assets to Disney, they still control Fox News, the Fox broadcast network, and Fox Sports.
- Elon Musk: Controls X (formerly Twitter), a primary hub for real-time news distribution.
- Jeff Bezos: Personally owns The Washington Post.
- Nexstar Media Group: The largest owner of local television stations in the US, owning or operating over 200 stations.
This concentration means that a very small number of executives and boards of directors decide what the vast majority of Americans see, hear, and read every day.
